As a personal friend of Wangari, Martin Rowe was deeply affected by Wangari’s untimely death in 2011.

“I knew Wangari very well. She took delight in my running, and (pumping her arms) she'd tell me how much she wanted to join me on the starting line, if only her knees didn't cause her so much trouble. All of us who knew her miss her deeply”.

In Wangari’s honour, Martin is running not one but THREE marathons on behalf of the Green Belt Movement! With the Chicago marathon already done and dusted he is now preparing for the NYC marathon (Nov 4th) and Brooklyn Marathon (Nov 18th).

A marathon veteran, Martin has run for numerous charitable organisations but has never attempted three marathons in such close succession! We are immensely grateful for his efforts and for the money he is raising on our behalf. These funds will help us to continue our work establishing tree nurseries and planting trees across Africa to protect critical watersheds, to mobilise women and their communities to take action to generate sustainable livelihoods, thereby promoting peace and democracy.
