The Wangari Muta Maathai House
A Legacy Project Honoring an Environmental and Social Justice Pioneer
A Legacy of Hope and Steadfastness
Wangari Muta Maathai's legacy takes many forms: the special qualities of her character and vision; the lessons she embraced through her journey; and the courage she demonstrated in speaking truth to power.
Her Enduring Impact
In Kenya, she remains a symbol of hope and steadfastness. Her moral authority, resilience, and incorruptibility are deeply missed by the people she represented. Globally, she is remembered for her unwavering commitment to the environment and marginalized communities, especially women.
The world continues to feel the absence of her strong voice, especially as nations confront the urgent realities of climate change. We, her family, friends, and the Green Belt Movement community, remain committed to ensuring her legacy continues to inspire action, courage, and conviction.
The Wangari Muta Maathai House
The Wangari Muta Maathai House (WMM House) is envisioned as a sanctuary for reflection, renewal, and learning — a home for her ashes and a center dedicated to growth, environmental education, and community empowerment.
"We cannot tire or give up. We owe it to the present and future generations of all species to rise up and walk!"
- Wangari Maathai
