Restoration of Mau East Ecosystem and Adjacent Farmlands for Climate Resilience and Improved Livelihoods

The Green Belt Movement in collaboration with TerraFund under AFR 100 Program aims to bring about 162ha of degraded lands under restoration in Sururu forest which is part of the greater Mau Water Towers within the greater Rift Valley Belt.

Currently, 95,500 indigenous tree seedlings in Upper Mau Beat in Sururu forest have already been planted within the first phase of the project restoring 60ha of degraded land, and 14,600 high-value agroforestry tree seedlings distributed to 300 farmers.

Outcomes

  • The project will incorporate restoration activities both in the forest and 600 farmers living around Sururu forest. 600 farmers will be provided with high-value agroforestry fruit trees including those for riparian rehabilitation.
  • The project aims to plant 230,000 trees within a period of 2 years.
  • Creation of 2400 jobs for the local communities within the specific project area.
