The Mount Kenya Greening Project

The Green Belt Movement (GBM) in partnership with Mainichi, has been mobilizing communities in the region to restore and protect their natural environment. The program was guided and hinged on the Mottainai concept of 3Rs (Reduction of environmental pollution, Reuse of natural resources, and recycling of indigenous materials).

Outcomes

• The create awareness through the program on the well-being of the importance of local resources.
• Capitalize on community-initiated tree-planting groups as the first step to restoring and protecting the environment.

The project aims at planting indigenous trees in degraded forest sites annually.
