Landscape Restoration in the Makuli – Nzaui Ecosystem, Kenya

Through a partnership with WRI, the Green Belt Movement has planted 645, 293 Indigenous trees in the forests within the Makuli-Nzaui Landscape since the project’s inception in 2021. The forests include; Nziu, Makongo, Kilala, Nzueni, Makuli, Mutula, Nthangu, Kitondo forests, Maatha Forests, and Kithendu Forests. In addition, 285,579 agroforestry fruit trees have been planted in farms engaging about 2,800 farmers across four landscape wards: Nzakika, Ukia, Wote/Nziu, and Muvau/Kikumini wards.
In 2024, we conducted planting activities across several key sites, which include Maatha Forest and Kithendu Forests. A total of 159 ha was completed in the previous year.
Outcomes
- Restore about 550 ha of degraded land in the forests.
- Create jobs for local communities within the Makuli- Nzaui Landscape.
- Enhance livelihoods by distributing high-value trees to farmers that will be a source of income.
