Invitation to Wangari Maathai Day 2015

March 3, 2015 - 08:30AM
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Headquarters Nairobi

In recognition of the work of the late Nobel Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai, the African Union (AU) designated the 3rd of March, every year, as Wangari Maathai Day (WMD) to be observed in conjunction with Africa Environmental Day (AED).

AED seeks to raise public awareness on environmental challenges in Africa such as climate change, desertification, deforestation, land degradation and endangered biodiversity which are mainly responsible for problems related to food security, health and development.

The UN General Assembly also proclaimed 3rd March as World Wildlife Day, to celebrate and raise awareness of the world's wild fauna and flora.

This year's theme for Wangari Maathai Day and Africa Environment Day is "Empowering Women in sustainable natural resource management "and for the World Wildlife Day is "wildlife crime is serious, let's get serious about crime".

As part of a series of joint celebrations being organized to mark the day, exhibitions by different organisations, including the Green Belt Movement (GBM), will be hosted at the Kenya Wildlife Service(KWS) Headquarters tomorrow 3rd March 2015 starting from 8:30am.

We therefore invite you to the event and welcome you to visit the GBM stand at the exhibition.

The event's programme will be shared at the venue.
